Henry VIII sabre letter opener — Royal Armouries collection

£35

Based on the original Henry VIIl Sabre (IX.634), which is part of the museum's collection, and dates to 1500AD, this miniature replica is produced from stainless steel and features a slightly curved grip and a 'beaked' pommel. The cross-guard exhibits a serpentine design which leads to a, 24cm long, curved blade (which is blunt for safety). The fuller of the blade is shallow and runs two-thirds of its length.

Weapons such as the original Sabre are illustrated in Flemish or South German manuscripts and the engraving on this particular blade has been compared to that visible on the armour of King Henry VIII (II.5).

Sabres are a type of backsword which have a single edged blade and usually a large guard to protect the hand. Although more commonly used in relatively modern warfare of the 19th Century, sabre-like, curved backswords date back to the early medieval period.

With the Henry VIII Sabre Letter Opener you can take home your own miniature piece of history. Complete with a Royal Armouries presentation box, this stylish mini sword is perfect for use as a letter opener or purely for decorative value, and will take pride of place in any home.
