Miniature Tudor longsword letter opener — Royal Armouries collection

£30

This letter opener that is part of the Royal Armouries mini replica collection, is a total of 33cm in length, making it the longest of our mini sword paper knives. It has a stainless steel blade and ball-ended cross guard, with a raised fuller. The grip, set in plastic, has the look of a leather-bound hilt, ending at a spherical black pommel. The sword that inspired this mini replica is on display with Henry VIII Tonlet Armour in the Royal Armouries collection.

The Longsword belongs to a group of swords that date back the 15th and early 16th Centuries. The longsword started out as a weapon of war, however, became obsolete in the military by the 16th Century and were then commonly used for foot combat tournaments. Surprisingly, longswords don't take their name from the 163cm blade like you would think. It is instead because of the long grip, which was intended for use with two hands.

Due to its length and quality finish this is a fine example of a miniature sword replica; it would make a fantastic object for display with fascinating historical context to discuss with friends and family. Not only is this a charming display item, it is also a fully functioning paper knife and letter opener.

All of our Royal Armouries collection mini swords come in a display box, which makes them a perfect gift for a special occasion such as Father's Day or Christmas.
