Tiffany presentation swords were first awarded during the American Civil War in recognition of heroic acts and distinguished military service. By the beginning of the 20th century, the firm had an international reputation for decorative firearms. Unfortunately, just two months before the event was due to take place, the French unexpectedly changed the specification for the foot-combat armour.
