Writhen hilt sword — Royal Armouries collection
This is a magnificently accurate replica of the 'Writhen' Hilt sword from the Collection here at the Royal Armouries in Leeds.
This hand-and-a-half sword is of German origin, dated circa 1480. It features a gilt-bronze pommel and cross-guard which appears as three twisted rods. The original wooden grip has been well preserved, a rarity for a medieval sword, and is carved to resemble a writhen stave bearing a gilt-bronze collar at its centre. The original sword can be viewed online in our collection.
This reproduction sword is part of the Royal Armouries Replica Collection. A specialist collection developed with, and approved by, our expert curators at every stage of the design process. This unique and unusual sword is the closest you will get to owning the real thing. The attention to detail given to this replica, from its initial design to its final production, is extraordinary. Purchasing this replica from the Royal Armouries Shop will ensure that swords, just like the Writhen Hilt, continue to be conserved, understood and remain accessible to the public.
Being so ornate in design, this replica sword is a brilliant gift for those interested in the artisanship of weaponry.
