Wooden, laser cut, model kit developed using contemporary plans and drawings of the counterweight trebuchet from within the Royal Armouries archive. This is a great activity for children and adults alike; you can learn the ins and outs of historical siege weaponry as you have fun building your very own, authentic, medieval trebuchet at home.
The Trebuchet is believed to be the largest of the medieval siege engines to have been used. At the Siege of Stirling Castle in 1304 Edward I famously used a huge trebuchet named 'Warwolf', which took five carpenters and 50 labourers some three months to build. Warwolf was such a fierce structure that, after seeing it, the residents of Stirling Castle tried to surrender knowing they wouldn't be able to withstand its force. So as not to deprive himself the pleasure of using his new expensive piece of artillery, Edward I refused to accept their surrender and went ahead with the Warwolf siege, killing all but 30 Scots and reducing the castle to rubble. Trebuchet ammunition often consisted of stone balls carved by medieval stonemasons, unlike this kit which provides cotton balls for safety reasons.
At Fort Nelson we operate firing demonstrations of our very own trebuchet throughout the year. Check here for more information on upcoming events at Fort Nelson.
