The Crusades were a series of religious wars, blessed by the Pope and the Catholic Church with the main goal of restoring Christian access to the holy places in and near Jerusalem.
This replica Crusader sword features an antiqued brassed hilt, the cross pattée of the Templar Order on the pommel and the Cross of St. George on the guard.
A cross pattée is a type of cross which has arms narrow at the centre, and broader at the perimeter. The cross pattée has become associated with the Knights Templar Crusader order. The Templars adopted the red cross on their white robes in 1147.
Officially endorsed by the Catholic Church around 1129, the Templar Order became a favored charity throughout Christendom, and grew rapidly in membership and power. Templar Knights, in their distinctive white mantles with a red cross, were among the most skilled fighting units of the Crusades. The Templars' existence was tied closely to the Crusades; when the Holy Land was lost, support for the Order faded.
