Meet the Maker: Handcrafted Felt Animals from Mongolia

As part of our exciting new exhibition, Genghis Khan: How the Mongols Changed the World, we're delighted to introduce a specially curated retail collection that celebrates the rich culture, craftsmanship and traditions of Mongolia.

Among the standout pieces in the collection are the beautifully handcrafted felt animals, created by skilled Mongolian artisans working in partnership with e-Mongol, an agency dedicated to preserving and promoting traditional Mongolian crafts.

A Craft Rooted in History

Felt has been an essential part of Mongolian life for thousands of years. Deeply connected to the country's nomadic heritage, it was traditionally used to build and insulate the ger (yurt), Mongolia's iconic portable home, as well as for clothing, rugs and household items.

Its durability and warmth made felt indispensable for surviving Mongolia's harsh climate, and the techniques used to create it have been passed down through generations. Today, these traditional methods continue to produce beautiful, high-quality handcrafted pieces that celebrate Mongolia's cultural identity.

Meet e-Mongol

Established in 2004, e-Mongol has spent more than 20 years working with wool and cashmere producers, artists and independent craftspeople across Mongolia. Their mission is to support traditional makers while bringing authentic Mongolian craftsmanship to a wider audience.

The artisans behind our felt animal collection specialise in felt making, a skill many have practised for decades. Working by hand using techniques that have remained largely unchanged for generations, they create each animal with exceptional care and attention to detail.

From Wool to Finished Creation

The materials used in these felt animals are sourced locally from Mongolian livestock, particularly sheep. Wool is collected during the seasonal spring shearing period, typically between May and June, before being processed and prepared for crafting.

Each artisan spends approximately two to three hours to complete each felt animal by hand. The result is a unique piece that showcases both remarkable craftsmanship and a deep connection to Mongolia's pastoral traditions.

The Significance of Animals in Mongolian Culture

Animals play a central role in Mongolian life and identity. For centuries, nomadic communities have depended on livestock for transport, food, clothing and shelter.

Many of the artisans have a personal connection to the animals they create. Horses are particularly significant, symbolising freedom, strength and the enduring spirit of Mongolia's nomadic culture. Sheep, camels and other animals also represent the pastoral traditions that continue to shape daily life across the country.

Every handcrafted design has been thoughtfully created to reflect authentic aspects of Mongolian life, from its nomadic traditions to the animals that have shaped the country's culture for centuries
